Tour 01 · Kyoto

Higashiyama & Gion, before the crowds

One route, walked properly. We start at Kiyomizu-dera while the city is still quiet, drift down the preserved lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, slip into Kōdai-ji the moment its gates open, then cross to Yasaka Shrine and finish in Gion — Kyoto's geisha district — by late morning.

The stone-paved lane of Ninenzaka in Higashiyama, lined with wooden machiya houses
Ninenzaka at first light — the lane your walk follows down from Kiyomizu-dera.
The bamboo grove path inside Kōdai-ji temple, Kyoto
Kōdai-ji's bamboo grove.
The vermillion main hall of Yasaka Shrine under a blue sky
Yasaka Shrine, Gion's guardian.
  1. 7:30

Kiyomizu-dera Entry · pay on the day

Meet early and take the famous wooden stage and pagoda views in near-quiet. The temple opens at 6:00, so a 7:30 start still beats the tour-bus hours.

  2. ~8:45

    Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka

Stone lanes of wooden machiya, teahouses and small craft shops. Time for coffee, matcha soft-serve, or just photographs while the lanes are still waking up.

  3. 9:00

Kōdai-ji Entry · pay on the day

Timed to its 9:00 opening: Zen gardens, tea houses built for Hideyoshi's widow Nene, and the quiet bamboo grove most daytime visitors rush through.

  4. ~10:15

    Yasaka Shrine

The shrine that anchors Gion — its lantern-lit stage, the Gion Matsuri story, and why this neighbourhood grew up around it.

  5. ~10:45

    Gion & Hanamikoji

Finish walking Hanamikoji's preserved teahouse street — with honest notes on geiko and maiko etiquette, and where to go next for lunch.

1  The name, explained: a footnote is the small print at the bottom of the page where the interesting details live. That's every Japan Footnotes tour — the stories behind the sights, told at walking pace.

Pricing · Tour 01, Kyoto · Guide-fee-only

One fee for the guide. Your entries stay yours.

Most tours bundle tickets, transport and lunch into one opaque price. Japan Footnotes doesn't — on every tour, in every city. You pay one guide fee; on the day, you pay your own transport, entries and food directly, at the real price, only for what you actually do. Draft note: the calculator below is for Tour 01 in Kyoto only, with suggested figures, not yet final. For the Kyoto Full Day, Evening Kyoto, Arashiyama Morning, Fushimi Inari + Sake District, Osaka, Osaka Food, Nara and Himeji Castle tours, no exact price is listed yet — enquire below and Japan Footnotes will confirm a clear suggested-draft guide fee for your date first.

  • Small-group (suggested): ¥9,800 per person, maximum 8 guests, if you'd rather join others2

How booking will work

Three steps, no surprises

STEP 01

Enquire or book

Send an enquiry below with your city and date, or book instantly once the platform listings go live. You'll get a clear confirmation of meeting point and start time.

STEP 02

Meet your guide

Meet your Japan Footnotes guide at the agreed meeting point — for Tour 01, that's near Kiyomizu-dera at 7:30 am. Bring comfortable shoes and cash for entries and small things.

STEP 03

Walk, pay as you go

At each gate, you pay your own entry — the real price, straight to the venue. Same for coffee or snacks. The guide fee is the only tour payment.

About Japan Footnotes

A small company, walked properly

Ninenzaka lane in Kyoto at dusk, lanterns lit along the wooden teahouses

Japan Footnotes is a walking-tour company providing tours in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Himeji, built around a simple idea: one neighbourhood, walked well, beats five rushed across a city. The company lists nine walks — five in Kyoto, two in Osaka, one in Nara, and a Himeji Castle day trip from Kyoto.

Every Japan Footnotes route is planned gate by gate around real opening times — for Tour 01, that's Kiyomizu-dera early, Kōdai-ji as its gates open at 9:00, and Gion before noon — and is test-walked before launch to confirm timings and gate prices for real, so each listing's pace comes from the actual walk, not a desk.

The guide-fee-only model is the other half of the idea. No packages, no arranged transport, no commission stops — just a guide, a route, and honest prices, in every city Japan Footnotes covers.

Questions

Before you ask

Why isn't the temple entry included in the price?

Because bundling hides the real cost. Guide-fee-only means you pay each temple directly at its gate — Kiyomizu-dera and Kōdai-ji together are ¥1,100–1,300 per person — and if a site is ever closed or you choose to skip it, you simply don't pay for it.

How much cash should I bring?

About ¥2,000 per person covers both temple entries with room for a coffee or snack. Some gates and small shops are cash-only, so coins and small notes help.

Private or small-group — which should I choose?

Private (suggested ¥24,000 per group, up to 4) is best for families and anyone who wants their own pace — for four people it's also the better value per person. Small-group (suggested ¥9,800 per person, max 8) suits solo travellers and couples happy to share the walk. Final formats and prices will be confirmed before bookings open.

Why start at 7:30 in the morning?

Higashiyama is a different place before 9:00 — quiet lanes, soft light, and Kiyomizu-dera without the crowds. The early start is the whole point of the tour, and you'll be done by late morning with the rest of your day free.

What happens if it rains?

The tour walks in light rain — Kyoto's lanes are arguably at their best wet. Routes have natural pause points under cover at temples and cafés along the way. For severe weather, rescheduling is arranged directly with you.

Is the walk difficult?

It's a gentle half-day on foot, but Higashiyama is hilly: expect stone slopes (Sannenzaka literally means "three-year slope"), temple steps and a few kilometres total. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

Can I photograph geiko and maiko in Gion?

Only respectfully, and never blocking their path — photography is prohibited on Gion's private side streets. Your Japan Footnotes guide will show you where photos are welcome and explain the rules that protect the district.

Do you offer tours outside Kyoto?

Yes. In Osaka there are two tours — the Osaka Tour (Umeda Sky Building and Osaka Castle) and the Osaka Food Tour (Namba, Dotonbori, Kuromon Market and Shinsekai). There's also a Nara Tour (Todai-ji, Nara Park and Kasuga Taisha) and a Himeji Castle Tour, run as a day trip departing from Kyoto. All are guide-fee-only, like the Kyoto tours.

How much do the other tours cost?

Only Tour 01 has draft prices shown on this page (in the Pricing section). For the Kyoto Full Day, Evening Kyoto, Arashiyama Morning, Fushimi Inari + Sake District, Osaka, Osaka Food, Nara and Himeji Castle tours, exact guide fees aren't listed yet — send an enquiry and Japan Footnotes will confirm a clear price for your date before you book. On every tour, your own transport, entries and food are on top of the guide fee, paid by you on the day.
